At the end of last year, I came to Ireland. At that time, the Leap Card I got showed an expiry date of September 30, 2025 (though it actually extends by about ten days). So I went to the language school front desk to get a school letter to renew the transport card.
1. Register the old card on the Leap Card official website (for deposit refund)
Log in to the Leap Card official website: https://leapcard.ie/Home/index.html and register an account, then select Register in the homepage navigation bar.
Enter your Leap Card number twice (14 digits).
2. Renew Leap Card

Follow the instructions on the page step by step. For Card Type, select the last option: “Student Leap Card (16-18 or 26+)” (as shown below).
If you are a language school student, on the College selection page, choose “Other” for College Name, “Language School” for Other Institute, and “Other” for Study Type (as shown below).
The documents you need to provide are only two:
- Passport;
- Letter from the school proving your identity and course details.
Please note:
- Both of these materials must be in image format, not PDF;
- The school letter must include the words “full time” (as shown below).
At the end, the system will prompt you to take a photo online or upload a photo to verify your identity. I chose online photo; stand against a white wall and try to take it as clearly as possible.
3. Collect the card in person
After receiving the approval email, you can go offline to collect the card. It is recommended to go to the Trinity College (TCD) Students’ Union to collect it (suggested by the school teachers), as other locations might have stricter checks. There are cases online where the renewal was approved online but the card was refused at other pickup points.
Materials needed for in-person pickup:
- Original passport;
- School letter (the one you uploaded online during the application);
- Leap Card approval email (you will need the Order Number in it).
