This year marks the ten-year anniversary of both the Marriage Equality Referendum and the passing of the Gender Recognition Act in Ireland.

Marriage Equality

In recent decades, Ireland has been on a journey of social change and transformation. On 22 May 2015, Ireland became the first country in the world to provide for marriage equality by popular vote.

To mark EU diversity week and 10 years of marriage equality in Ireland, on 19 May the Embassy of Ireland in China held a special screening of the documentary “The 34th”. The film chronicles the decade that culminated in the 34th amendment to the Irish constitution, and follows the founders and members of the Marriage Equality organisation, as they successfully campaigned for the extension of civil marriage to same-sex couples.

During the event, Óscar Rodríguez Fernández, a board member of the Spanish LGBTI+ Federation, Belgian drag queen Edna Sorgelsen, and Denis Staunton, Irish Times correspondent in China, shared their insights on marriage equality and LGBTQI+ rights with the audience.

Policy Priority

The promotion and protection of the rights of LGBTQI+ persons is a domestic and foreign policy priority for Ireland.

Participation in annual Pride events shows our support to LGBTQI+ persons and LGBTQI+ civil society and draws attention to the inequalities experienced by persons with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics.
